When life gets busy and time runs short, romance often takes a back seat. We mean to do the sweet little things that we used to do, but we get distracted and forget. Or we remember the days when we had time to plot out elaborate ways to show our love. But work, schedules, family, obligation take over.

It can even leave you yearning for a sappy, commercial Valentine's Day card.

Fixing the romantic drain is actually very easy. And quick. And good for you. [wink, wink.]

Write a little love note (it can even just say "I love you"). Hide it somewhere your partner won't find right away, like a purse, wallet, coat pocket, etc. Then, later in the day, text your partner to look in the hiding spot. Feeling elaborate? Hide movie or concert tickets instead.

Do you have a special place? Where you first met or got engaged? Go there. If you can't actually get there, recreate it. Your favorite vacation was to Mexico? Go get margaritas or take tacos to the beach.

Clearing The Clutter

Spring has come early this year, and with it, the desire to organize!

I have 4 young children and work from a home office with 2 businesses. My life feels far from organized.

I confess that I dream of an organized home. I page through catalogs that promise to manage my house. I look through websites that offer complete systems to create order. I go to stores and seek out products that will make my life easier, simpler. I think up ways that should keep my family and business on track.

Then, I have days when I want to pitch everything I own and just start over.

Before and After:

My suggestion to help you get organized: find a friend to get organized with! It would be great if that friend wanted to come over and clean your house for you, but that probably won't happen. (On the off-chance you do have a friend that likes to clean, send 'em my way!)

My friend and I have started taking before and after photographs of our cleaning and organizing projects. We will then email or text the photographs to each other. This works because we get to see the improvement from the start of the task to the end, offer suggestions on what might work, get suggestions of things we should do, plus we get the validation of our friend seeing the hard work we put into it and cheering us on. Which is really the biggest reason of all. (Because most husbands won't notice, which is a different matter entirely....)

Tanner | Modeling Headshots

Tanner loved getting his modeling headshots done, in true form for any young man that is thinking about modeling! And he was such a ham to work with that day!

Carrie & Jose | Wedding

Carrie and Jose's wedding was a multicultural event for us. Jose's entire family only speaks Spanish and most of Carrie's speaks only English. However, on the day of the wedding, there were no barriers between the families. Even those that could not make the trip were included, through Skype. We loved seeing the Mexican traditions that were incorporated into the day.

The wedding ceremony was done in both languages, as were all the speeches at the reception.

Carrie and Jose worked hard to make sure that both families were represented and respected. Not being Spanish speakers ourselves didn't even cause us any worry. The day went smoothly, and the photographs were easy-peasy, with some translating from Carrie (and an app that Chris had downloaded to his iPhone). It was a beautiful day and a wonderful group of people!

Better Late Than Never | Album from 2006

Wedding albums are important.

We know the main reason couples choose to have photographers at their wedding- planning the family portraits, capturing little details, getting romantic shots of the bride and groom- is to be able to show off their favorite photographs afterward.

These moments are too important to allow just any old cheap digital camera or cell phone manned by a guest be the only way they are captured. And, throwing a few pictures on facebook is not the best way to remember the day. Couples know that is not how you preserve such a big event as two families joining together, creating a new family history. Yes, it’s fun to share images by email and on social sites. But, they know that the internet is not a substitute for an heirloom.

And we love that clients want photographs. They want polished portraits, images that show them at their best. And they want to share the story of their wedding in a way that only a wedding album can.

We are proud of the fact that 90% of our clients have wedding albums to remember their special day. We make sure that the images in those albums are the ones that tell their story.

So we were thrilled when Jane and Kaushik, who were married in 2006, recently came back to have their wedding album created. We loved knowing that this album was so important to them, that even after all these years, they held it as a priority to get it designed and made. It's not often that we are asked to make an album for a wedding that was more than 5 years ago, but we loved being able to do it.

And we know that as their family grows, they will be happy that they have this album to share their favorite wedding day photographs.

Album Love

The finished wedding album was very important to Ashley. She knew this was going to be something she would cherish forever and wanted it to be perfect. Ashley put a lot of thought into how she wanted everything to look and worked with us to make sure it followed her vision. Ashley's mother was also very excited about the wedding and the album. She choose to go with a matching album in the exact same size as Ashley and Casey chose for their wedding album.

This album is the Artistic Skinny, with matte art pages and full custom cover. Ashley said it was perfect, that it turned out exactly how she wanted it. I'm sure she is having fun showing off her beautiful album and reliving her fabulous day!

Fall Family Session | Madison Wisconsin

This was my favorite image from the whole session! I loved how the brother and sisters were playing around together, teasing like they normally would.

I feel honored that I have been able to photograph Melanie's family several times, including when their youngest was a newborn. This session was fun with the antique sofa. I hadn't realized it was an antique when I bought it, so I felt a little guilty taking it out into the park!

Ashley & Casey | Weddings

Ashley & Casey were married at the Monona Terrace in downtown Madison Wisconsin last summer. They were married on the rooftop and their reception followed in the Grand Terrace and in a ballroom.

The view during the ceremony was stunning! The chuppah was on the lakeside of the rooftop terrace, so all the guests were able to see the couple against the view of the lake.

During the reception, we sneaked back up to the roof top for a few more images at dusk.

The room was beautiful! And the dancing was a blast! They did a traditional Jewish dance, Hora, that got more of the guests up and enjoying the start of the evening.

Ashley and Casey's album is complete, and I'll be sharing some of those images soon!

Emily & Eric | Album

I had posted about our new albums that we added to our line-up before the big bridal show in Madison (and I'm showing it again here). I was showing off the beautiful cover, which I *LOVE*, so now I'm showing some of the page layouts inside:

Clothing "Do" and "Don't"

Combining colors for a family portrait takes a bit of deliberate effort. You want to make sure that everyone coordinates, yet shows their own style. The key to making it look good and on purpose is to use the same colors multiple times within the family outfits.

Using one color and varying the shades is easy. Choosing blues, and having your family wear different shades and styles works. But when you pull in another color, like the red sweater, below, the person in that red sweater suddenly becomes the focus of the portrait. When you have a beautiful close-up of everyone together, this family's outfits scream "Look at Mom, look at Mom!" Now, if that is what you are going for, great. But, most families want everyone in the portrait to be noticed. This becomes an even bigger problem when we work with smaller groupings within the family.

A better way to combine colors is to have multiple people in the family use those colors. In this example, pinks and browns are repeated throughout the outfits, both separately and together. When doing smaller groupings, such as the kids alone, parents with kids and parents alone, the extra effort in planning the clothing will really pay off.

If you are still in doubt, stick with one color and work with the different shades of that color. If you have any questions, let me know!

Emily & Eric | Wedding

Emily and Eric were married in Madison, Wisconsin, at St. Thomas Aquinas. Their reception followed at the Pyle Center, on the UW campus. Being a school teacher, Emily was able to have a fellow art teacher make their Thank You sign. We incorporated that into their Thank You cards after the wedding. It was a fun way to show off wedding images with their notes to family and friends.

We featured Emily and Eric's wedding in a new album style that we just started offering. I'll post a few of the layouts from that album soon!

Maria & Matthew | Family

We were delighted to photograph Maria and Matthew's blended family. It was fun to capture the different combinations of family groupings and to show the new relationships within their family. They had such a hard time choosing from all of the great images that after we figured out the wall portrait arrangements for the different rooms in their home, we also did an album, so they could show off and enjoy all of their favorites.

Lisa & Zach | Engagement

Lisa and Zach are getting married in July 2012. While they make their home on the east coast, they are planning a Madison wedding. On one of their trips home, we were able to squeeze in their engagement session. The UW Arboretum was the perfect backdrop for the day. Lisa and Zach were such a fun couple to work with and we are really looking forward to capturing the wedding day, as well!

Bridal Show Advice

Are you recently engaged? Are you still planning your wedding? Are you attending a bridal show this month?

This is definitely the time of year that there are plenty of bridal shows to choose from! While bridal shows may vary in size, all will offer you the opportunity to see and meet with a variety of wedding professional in one place at one time. While some shows may be small and intimate, others may be huge and a bit overwhelming.

I have a couple pieces of advice for you to "make the most" of any show that you attend:

1. Know what you need.

Figure out in advance if you will be tasting cakes or looking for photographers. While you can, and should, try to walk through the whole show, if you don't have a game plan, you may find that you get too tired or distracted to find the wedding professionals you went to the show to find.

2A. Take good notes.

Imagine arriving at the bridal show with 200 wedding professionals showcasing their services and wares and you have the good luck of finding the best cake baker in the whole state. "But," you think, "maybe I should go peek and have a quick taste of the other cakes, just to be sure." After a few more tastes, your tongue is sugared-out and you forgot who your favorite baker was, let alone where their booth is located and now you fear you will have to settle for blah ordinary wedding cake! Taking good notes could have saved you.

When you find a wedding professional that you love, write it down, either on the literature they hand out, on their business card, or on the show program. Taking a few notes on why you love them will also help you remember who they are after you leave the show. Don't rely on your memory; you will have too many other things to see and do.

2B. Bring a fine-tip Sharpie.

Having a pen handy is helpful, and a lot of shows will even give you one for free, but having a fine-tip Sharpie is even better. Some wedding professionals will have a glossy brochure or a glossy business card which is difficult to write on with a pen. Your Sharpie will write on almost anything, so it is perfect for your bridal show note-taking.

It's that time of year again- when we update our album offerings! And just in time for the bridal shows. If you will be attending, please stop by to check them out!

We are excited to add a new album style to our line-up. This is a beautiful album that will complement our Artistic albums.

We also have a new wedding to show off in one of our Contemporary albums. This is a fun wedding that we affectionately call "the button wedding" because all the bouquets were made from buttons and they used buttons as a theme.

Clothes for Christmas

I admit it. I coordinate my kids' outfits for Christmas so they will look good for photographs. Do you need ideas for cute clothes for the holidays? Check out these great options!

How To Dress Your Family

Buying clothes should be easy. You just go into a store, try on a few things in your size, decide what you like and check out.

It is NEVER that easy.

Then you add buying clothes for your WHOLE family. Plus you want them to look good together. You may find one or two great outfits for yourself or a couple of the kids, but then it gets complicated. Let the headaches begin.

As I had planned my family's portrait session in October, it really hit home how much it helps to see other families with their complete outfits. As you select clothes, you really have to keep in mind how all the outfits with work with each other. Any colors that you introduce have to be used more than once (but limit it to two) and any patterns have to be balanced- competing patterns can ruin all your efforts!

When in doubt- stick to solids, pick one color and vary the shades and styles, and keep the bottoms the same.

Mariah & Stephen | Wedding

Mariah and Stephen were married in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin this fall. Outdoor weddings in the midwest can be tricky to plan, knowing you might need an alternate location, in case it rains. (But they say rain on the wedding day is good luck, so that should be okay!) Mariah and Stephen had a beautiful day, with just a bit of rain after their ceremony. Aside from needing to do a few family portraits inside, we were able to capture the rest of the day outside with the fabulous fall colors.
