Family Sessions

Urban Kids

Have you seen the new window display and website gallery? If not, walk by our windows and go to Appleby Photography's website to check out the images! Our newest project is Urban Kids, a fun display of children highlighted by the urban setting of downtown Madison. The children had a blast and were so much fun to work with for these sessions. Request your Urban Kids session the next time you schedule your child's appointment!

So Excited!

I just love getting "fun" mail and packages! I just received the package with all of our new window display photographs and couldn't wait to rip it open to see them. The kids all look great! :) There were so many cute kids that it was hard to narrow down the choices. I wish we had more room to display even more! Luckily, the website display has enough space and we can showcase more of the kids. I can't wait to redo the windows! Hopefully we will have a very busy weekend and can get it all done! 

Almost Time to Say Good-bye to the Baby Window Display

I can't believe how fast the summer is flying by. With hot air balloon and Persian wedding ceremonies, a falling bride and groom (there were rumors of a YouTube video in the works) and lots of children's portraits, July is a blur. Now we have August here and school starting within a few weeks- our oldest starts back in only two!

We are very excited to create our new window display, but that also means that we have to say good-bye to all the adorable babies that are in the current window display. We have enjoyed this display so much and have heard so many nice comments about the cute newborns. If you haven't seen it yet, please come by soon, before it's gone!

We will keep you posted as to when the new one goes up- there will be some excited children to see themselves highlighted in the windows!

New Fall Studio Window Display

WANTED: 6 models for fall studio window and website display

Participants will be photographed at the studio for no charge. You will receive a free gift portrait as your Thank You. Your child's image will be used for studio samples and marketing material. Dates for Limited Edition Children's Sessions

As earlier posted, we have our dates for our upcoming Limited Edition Urban Boys and Sassy Girls Children's Sessions in July. These are the cute, fun sessions that will show off boys looking cool and girls being sweet or sassy in pettiskirts, great for all ages of kids- babies to pre-teens.

We are now accepting reservations for these sessions.

Mark you calendar for the July Dates and call the studio today at 280-8845! Prime dates and times will fill fast!

Remember, there is NO SESSION FEE for these special sessions. We will not be having pre-planning sessions beforehand, as all important information will be covered by phone and e-mail. Photo Restoration Sale

We would love to help you preserve those old photographs and restore them to their former beauty. Now through the end of June, just bring us your old photograph, and for $50, we will restore it and give you an 8x10 portrait of the enhanced image. Wedding Planner and Guide Bridal Show

We are excited about the annual Madison Summer Bridal Show, presented by the Wedding Planner & Guide (the ones that do that big show in January), that takes place tomorrow! The show is from 4pm to 9pm on Wednesday, June 17th at the Marriott Madison West. Ticket information is available at the Wedding Planner & Guide website, and tickets are also available at the door. We have included an engagement session package in the Bridal Show Giveaway, so sign up for your chance to win! New Album Cover

We just got in a new album with a beautiful custom cover! This is a new option with the Contemporary Album line. We will be able to show off this album at the upcoming bridal show, which is June 17th. (Check out the Wedding Planner and Guide website for more info.)

Limited Edition Children's Sessions

We will be offering special Limited Edition Urban Boys and Sassy Girls sessions on select dates in July. These will be sessions geared towards kids from newborns to age 12. We will focus on downtown Madison, creating an urban, cool setting for girls and boys. For the girls, we will have pettiskirts on hand, size newborn up to girls' size 12. However, if you want your color choice, you will want to order your very own pettiskirt by the end of May, as these are custom made. Check your May e-mail newsletter for a great coupon! Sizes are available in newborn up to teen/women's small/medium. Clothing suggestions for what to wear with the pettiskirts and ideas for your urban boy will be offered! There is no session fee for these Limited Edition sessions and we will have two specials. A $195 deposit will reserve your time. That full amount will go towards your order. Two great options that you will love for your session: a package that includes an 11x14 wall portrait, 2 5x7's and 8 wallets for only $299 ($375 value) or a 10 image album allows you to keep all of your favorite images for only $350 ($400 value). All other prints are at regular studio prices. Madison's First Farmers' Market

Saturday marked the return of the Farmers' Market to the Madison Capitol square. The weather was perfect: sunny and in the 70's. Since there are not much for fresh vegetables yet aside from some salad greens, the crowd could buy meat, cheese, flowers, fresh bakery and enjoy the weather. 

Baby Display is Up!

We are very excited to share our newest display- and it's all about newborns! These are some images from when it was finished last night. I'd love to share images from the day, but the glare on the windows would make seeing the photographs inside difficult. So, instead of waiting for the perfect cloudy day (we've already had enough of those!), you get to enjoy the warm glow of tungsten. Please stop by and see it in person, too! Sad to See Brava Go

It makes me feel sad to see local Madison magazine brava go away. When they called to tell me, it made my heart ache a bit for them. You can read the scoop here (link to WKOW 27 news) and here (link to Wisconsin State Journal). The magazine always cheered the working professional women of Wisconsin, and the void left will be hard to fill. The future is uncertain for the annual Woman's Expo, but I hope someone will step up and carry this event on. It was great for the community.

That "New Baby" Smell....

The new window display will be up next week! Thank you to all the parents of newborns that came in, and thanks to everyone for getting the word out. I know what a big deal it can be to just leave the house with a new little one, so I really appreciate the effort! We are excited to showcase the babies and hope you enjoy the images! We are happy to announce that we finally have a Facebook Fan Page! Come visit us and sign up to be a fan. The idea is for us to share information about what is going on at the studio and with us. Also, we plan on sharing images from sessions, hopefully tagging our fans, so they can share them, too. We just ask that you do NOT remove our tag. :) So, starting in April, watch for images of YOU! (Yes, please feel free to bug us if you don't see your images!)

We are still new at all of this, so please bear with us as we try to figure the technology out. It makes me feel old-school to say that I prefer my 'paper and pen' planner, and that I type really slow. At least our kids can remind us how true that is: Madalyn, age 8, wanted us to explain what a typewriter was ("It's like a computer, but there is no screen and you can only make one copy...") and Lydia, age 3, told us she *needs* an iPod touch (not a regular iPod- she needs the screen on her iPod), and Henry, age 1, is sure he can take photos with his play cell phone....

Newborn Needed for Studio Display

I am getting ready to do a new window display at our studio that will feature a newborn. If you or someone you know has a new baby, age 0-14 days old as of right now, please contact us! The shoot needs to be scheduled for the week of March 30th or April 6th.

Is Winter Done Yet?

The fact that we have several inches of snow in the forecast for the weekend says that winter is still here. That's sad news since the last of the snow just melted from our yard last weekend. At least everyone at our house is healthy for the moment. It feels like the kids, mainly Henry, have been battling one cold or flu bug after another for weeks. I'm convinced that if we could just get outside more, we would all be good!

We were quite excited tonight to get a sentence out of Henry, who is 16 months old. Henry took his sweet time with gracing us with his gift of gab. We knew he could speak, he just chose not to share it with us. At a little over a year, Henry would get coached by big sister Lydia: "Henry say 'goo goo ga ga.'" Henry: "Goo goo goo ga." Lydia: "Henry say 'ta-da.'" Henry: "Ta-da." Lydia: "Henry say  'uh-oh.'" Henry: "Uh-oh." Lydia: "Henry say 'mama.'" Henry: [silence] It was no surprise after months of the whole family begging for 'mama' that he first proclaimed 'Lydia.' 

Then, tonight, after we scolded Lydia for sliding out of her chair repeatedly at dinner, Henry declared to us, "Lydia good girl."

So, there you have it. In Henry's eyes, big sister Lydia does no wrong.

(Of course, Lydia also says that Henry wants to share, as she swipes food off his plate, and he doesn't seem to mind. Yet.)

Baby Expo Was Great!

Thank you to everyone that stopped by our booth at the Baby Expo this weekend! 

We were happily surprised by the great turnout on Saturday, even with the snow advisory and the 6+ inches of snow that Madison received. It was nice that so many people braved the cold and bad roads to come. Sunday was even more busy, with lots of babies participating in the Diaper Derby. The crawling race for babies was fun to watch, with the results being quite unpredictable. The baby that could crawl the quickest was not always the baby to finish first!

We will be announcing our drawing winner in the next E-mail Newsletter. (If you don't receive it, let us know your e-mail address to get on the list!) Also, we have a special Thank You gift that we are mailing to everyone that signed up at our booth, so keep an eye out for that.

Lydia is almost three, so we did her birthday session a little early. She is just SO cute in this petticoat!

Jewelry and Accessories

We now offer a complete line of custom photo jewelry and accessories. My favorite piece is one of the necklaces (shown above), which I wear to show off my son.
There are a lot of fun ideas for these: a ring would be a fun way to preserve a bridal bouquet long after the flowers have died. The keychain (shown) would be cute with your puppy's face. Bracelets allow you to show a whole series of your child's expressions. Baby feet are perfectly precious on a necklace. Men will be able to show off their loved ones with business card holders and money clips, in addition to the jewelry we offer.

Hair We Go!

Today was an exciting day for us, and a bit emotional! Madalyn, age 8, has wanted to donate her golden curls to an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients since she heard about it in kindergarten. We choose to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, which creates and distributes wigs for free to woman through the American Cancer Society. She has been growing her hair out, and it finally was long enough to donate. Madalyn was nervous, as this was the first time she had her hair cut short, only having "trims" in the past, but she absolutely loves her new shoulder-length hair style! 

On another note, Becky was sad to have today mark the first haircuts for both Lydia, age 2, and Henry, age 1. It was especially hard to see Henry's little curls go! 

New Bags

Checking In

I can't believe summer is over. It was bitter-sweet today as we sent our oldest off to school. It's amazing how fast the summer flew by! Here is a peek at what we have been doing- lots of weddings! By the way, Madalyn is feeling better, though she is still healing. Also, we got our own family portraits taken this summer- check out our About Us page to see the new images, which now include Henry. Thanks Merrilee!

First Trip to E.R.

We had to do it. We had to make our first trip to the Emergency Room last night. Actually, with three kids, it wasn't a question of "if", but "when". Madalyn had the honor of being our first child to do so. She had the misfortune of riding her bike into a parked car (which, I hear, is not all that uncommon). Luckily, she was wearing her bike helmet and her head was fine. Unluckily, it was her knee that took the brunt of the crash. With a wound deemed "too big for stitches", she is now happily resting at home. All in all, the trip wasn't too bad and Madalyn was very brave- though she still hasn't actually looked at her wound, and I can't say that I blame her!

New Contemporary Album Options

We are happy to announce our new expanded options with the Contemporary Album line! We now have 12 beautiful colors to choose from for your cover, which allows you to pick the perfect shade to show off your photographs. Also joining the Contemporary line-up: matching parent albums! The parent albums have been such a hit with the Storybook Album line, that we are excited to be able to offer them with the Contemporary Albums, too! As with the Storybook Albums, exact matches will be at a special price, but will also be available to order separately.

New Display in Windows

We have updated the display windows! I think this is the first time ever that we have had all color photographs in the windows.

What's New

We had the summer bridal show on Wednesday and it went well! This year was busier than it's been since the Wedding Planner & Guide started the summer show, so it's neat that word is getting out about what a great show it is. Plus, it's a bit easier to manage than the huge winter show! This is the first time in all the years that we have done bridal shows that we forgot to take a photograph of our booth, so you'll just have to take our word that it looked great.

We posted some May sessions & weddings (a couple of these were seen at the bridal show) to enjoy, and will be updating our display windows very soon. Also, our Contemporary Albums have gotten better! We now offer more color selections and matching parent albums! And because we love to add new things to our line-up, be watching for a new album line in the next few weeks. The options with this new line are a lot of fun!

On the home-front, Henry has started to crawl! Actually, last weekend was busy for him with milestones: he clapped, crawled, and sat up by himself. He doesn't understand that his mother needs him to spread out the milestones so she can enjoy them more.

Recent Sessions

What The Duck!

I just received an e-mail from Aaron Johnson, a Wisconsin man responsible for creating the on-line comic "What The Duck". The comic is about a duck who is a struggling professional photographer, and the e-mail is his simple way of advertising his strip. A few newspapers have picked it up, but it's popularity has grown mainly by word-of-mouth. Some of the strips are only funny to us photographers, but others hold universal appeal. The thing that makes these comic strips so interesting is that Aaron takes suggestions from his readers, not only for the content, but for the title of the strip, which is named the day after it appears by the best reader post to his site. Flooding in Cedar Rapids

Many of you know that both of us are from and have family in the Cedar Rapids, IA area. Our hometown, as well as the town where we went to college to the north, has been hit very hard by the flood waters from the Cedar River. Our families are safe and dry, but are shocked by the current state of the city. Becky's mom says that places you never thought would flood are now under water. There are updates and some amazing photographs on The Gazette's website.

Bridal Show Time Again!

We are excited that the summer bridal show is quickly approaching! It is such a good time to show off new albums and connect with couples that are getting married. Stop by our booth, which is #202, by the main entrance, to see what new offerings we have. We are really excited about the new Proof Books!!! You have to come check them out!

The bridal show is put on by The Wedding Planner and Guide (the same people that do that really big one in January), and it's next Wednesday, June 18th. The doors open at 4pm. You can check out their website to purchase tickets early, or you can purchase them at the door. Be sure to sign up for the prize package! There are a lot of good things included in it, and best of all, an engagement session by us, with an 11x14 portrait or guest book.

Half-Marathon

This year, we once again did the Madison (formally "Mad City") Marathon half-marathon. Again, we had our friends, Becca and Tim, joining us. Training was a lot harder this time around. Having three children now, finding time to fit running into our schedules was next to impossible. We also did our part to help break the record for most brats sold at the Brat Fest. And, I think I may not need to eat another brat until next year!

Henry at 6 months

I can't believe how fast the time is flying by! I am already missing all the baby stages with Henry, and he is only six months old! He is acting like he could crawl any day now, but as any parent knows, that doesn't mean he will. Here are two images from his session. I love the close-up because that is a smile I see a lot.

May is always our "busy" month!

I don't know why, but May is always crazy for us, both with the studio and at home! Our schedule is looking full already, and we are only a week into the month. In April, Madalyn celebrated her First Holy Communion and turned eight. The image of her is from her eight-year session. The image of Lydia finishes her two-year session (only a bit behind) and shows off her HotSling, with Baby inside. We kicked off our wedding season in April. Congratulations to Dave and Angie! Angie put so much work into all the details of their big day! Here are a couple teasers.

Tonight, Madalyn has her dance recital, with ballet, tap and jazz dances. Chris makes his "dance recital debut", as fathers are included in the ballet portion. He's feeling a bit nervous, but I'm sure they will both do great!

Spring Cleaning

Okay, it's actually more like a "Honey Do" list than a "Spring Cleaning" list, but we have been busy making improvements around the studio! We have created more seating in our entry area, with Chris building another alcove seat (which we both tend to call a "window seat", though it lacks a window). We now have a larger viewing area in our meeting room. The leather couch is a comfy addition to the room, too. And my favorite, we now have a mini coffee bar! The world wouldn't be the same without coffee, and now we can share the caffeine with all of our friends!

Booking Weddings for 2009

Wow! We are amazed at how many brides and grooms we have met with that are already booking weddings for 2009. We are excited to see so many organized couples! It appears that some of those prime dates will be filled earlier than usual for next year. We do still have a couple dates for 2008, so feel free to call to check availability.

Henry's Baptism

Henry was baptized today. He actually seemed to enjoy having the holy water poured on his head! Here he is, in his 3 month photograph, which shows his Christening gown. It took us a bit of work to find a simple gown for a boy, as we wanted something traditional that could be passed on in the family. We found this beautiful gown at Goo Goo Gaa Gaa in Brookfield, WI. They were so helpful!

Diaper Fluff!

We made the switch to cloth diapers, which are much better for the environment than disposable diapers. So far, things are going well! We are using a Madison business, Mother Nature's Diaper Service. So, good for the earth, good for local business. Three month old Henry and twenty-three month old Lydia show off their diaper covers!

On-line Ordering

To streamline on-line orders, all orders placed through the website will now be shipped directly to you. This will allow us to get your order to you quicker! Orders over $400 will receive free shipping! As the ordering website is separate from the studio, there is no option for special requests when ordering on-line. Special requests, albums, collections, etc. are still available however, and will need to be ordered directly through the studio, by appointment.

2008 Bridal Show

We had a great time at the 2008 Wedding Planner and Guide bridal show this weekend! This was our 7th year at the show, and it just keeps getting better. We meet with a lot of happy brides and grooms and look forward to chatting more! Thanks to everyone that stopped by to say "hello"!

We Welcome with Love

We are happy to announce the arrival of our son, Henry William. He joined us on November 12th, weighing 8 pounds, 10 ounces, and was 21.5 inches long. We have included a few photographs taken at the hospital. Henry will have his first studio session very soon and will be featured in one of our display windows. We will let you know when we update them!

Quick Update

We are just posting quick to let everyone know that our new baby has arrived and everyone is healthy and doing good. We welcomed a boy on Monday. We'll update soon with information and photos!

Limited Hours and Planning Ahead

We are expecting our new little baby any day now! Therefore, we are very limited in our availability for appointments for the next few weeks. If you need to get in touch with us, e-mail is best. We will also return voicemails, but probably not as quickly.

Also, now is a great time for you to plan ahead for portrait sessions and save! All sessions booked between now and December 7th will be at current prices for sessions, portraits, albums and wall groupings. This includes sessions that will be taking place over the next couple of months, not just through December. Sessions booked after December 7th will be at our new 2008 rates. Let us know if you have any questions and when you would like to schedule your session!

Happy Halloween!

Madalyn took forever to decide what she wanted to be for Halloween this year. So many options, only one day! Finally, she decided she wanted to be a University of Wisconsin cheerleader. And only a Badgers uniform would do! So, while it would have been cute to dress Lydia up like a cat (as in "copycat") or a monkey (as in "monkey see, monkey do"), Lydia is a Baby Badger cheerleader.

With only a few weeks left until the baby comes, we have finally decided we need to start thinking of baby names. There is a lot of pressure to find the "perfect" name, especially when you need to take into account sibling names, last names, and preconceived impressions about names.

Goodbye Mary Beth!

Tonight, we had to say goodbye to our nanny, Mary Beth. It was very hard and there were a few tears shed. This summer, Mary Beth had discovered that Madalyn loves ABBA. She quickly learned all the lyrics and requested to hear ABBA every time they got into Mary Bath's car. She has already started listening to the CD Mary Beth gave her as a "going away" present. We wish Mary Beth the best as she goes forward, with Master's degree in hand. Also, we would like to welcome our new nanny, Maria. We are excited to get to know her.

Vow Renewal

We just returned from a great family trip. Becky's parents have been married 35 years and they renewed their wedding vows this summer, with the whole family in attendance. It was wonderful to have all of us together for such a happy event (there are 17 of us now)!
